Denmark Criticizes Trump Over Greenland

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has sharply criticized the administration of President Donald Trump for placing what she described as “unacceptable pressure” on Denmark and Greenland. Her comments came on Tuesday, just days before high-ranking U.S. officials are scheduled to visit the Arctic island.

Frederiksen interpreted the visit as a continuation of pressure from Washington, following earlier remarks by President Trump suggesting that Greenland should become part of the United States. Speaking to Danish broadcaster TV 2, Frederiksen emphasized that visits by official representatives from another country cannot be classified as private.

“You can't have a private visit with official representatives from another country,” she stated. Frederiksen also pointed out that Greenlandic politicians have made it clear they oppose the upcoming visit, calling it a sign of disrespect toward both Greenland and Denmark.

“It's clear that when you make a visit like this and the Greenlandic politicians clearly state that they don't want the visit, you can't interpret it as respectful,” she concluded.

Frederiksen further emphasized that Denmark and Greenland are not standing alone, noting that they have the backing of other Nordic countries and the European Union. This solidarity, she suggested, reinforces their resistance to perceived U.S. overreach in the Arctic region.

The planned visit has revived tensions surrounding U.S. interest in Greenland, which holds strategic and resource value. The Trump administration’s continued attention to the territory has raised diplomatic concerns in Copenhagen, where officials are cautious about sovereignty and protocol.

Denmark's firm stance signals a broader defense of its autonomy and regional alliances as geopolitical attention on the Arctic intensifies.
