Trump May Raise Russia Sanctions
United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated on Wednesday that President Donald Trump "would not hesitate" to raise sanctions against Russia if doing so would give him a strategic advantage in negotiations.
Speaking in an interview with Fox News, Bessent emphasized that the decision to increase or decrease sanctions will largely depend on the actions of Russian leadership. “It will be determined by Russian leadership's next moves whether the sanctions go up or down,” he said. “And President Trump, I think, would not hesitate to raise the sanctions if it gives him a negotiating advantage.”
Bessent highlighted the role of the Department of the Treasury in national security efforts, particularly through financial operations and sanctions enforcement. He underscored the administration’s willingness to use economic pressure as a central tool of foreign policy, especially in dealings with nations like Russia.
His comments come amid ongoing global discussions on the future of sanctions against Moscow. Earlier the same day, French President Emmanuel Macron also addressed the topic, stating that it is “too early” to discuss lifting sanctions on Russia. Macron's remarks reflect continued caution among Western allies about easing pressure on the Kremlin.
The possibility of heightened sanctions signals a potentially tougher stance from the Trump administration, depending on how Russia responds to current geopolitical dynamics. As the situation evolves, financial sanctions remain a key instrument in shaping international policy and diplomatic leverage.
