Shooting at New Mexico Park Kills 3

Three people were killed and at least 15 others were injured in a mass shooting late Friday night at Young Park in Las Cruces, New Mexico, according to local authorities. The deadly incident occurred around 10 p.m. local time while approximately 200 people were gathered at the park for recreational activities and music.

Las Cruces Police confirmed that the victims included two 19-year-old men and a 16-year-old boy. The names of the deceased and those injured have not yet been publicly released. Injured individuals ranged in age from 16 to 36 years old, with many caught in the crossfire. Multiple firearms were involved in the attack, and investigators recovered between 50 and 60 shell casings at the scene.

Gunshot victims were rushed to multiple hospitals, including all three local facilities and the University Medical Center of El Paso, a regional trauma center. Las Cruces Fire Chief Michael Daniels stated that six people were initially transported to Memorial Medical Center via ambulance and private vehicles. Four of the wounded have since been treated and released. In total, seven patients were moved to El Paso for further care.

Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story described the chaos of the scene at a press conference on Saturday, emphasizing the complexity of the investigation and the potential involvement of multiple shooters. Authorities have not yet identified a suspect or suspects and are asking bystanders to provide videos or tips that could help in the investigation.

The Las Cruces Police Department is working with the New Mexico State Police, the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives to determine what led to the violent outbreak.

Young Park and surrounding roads have been temporarily closed as law enforcement continues its search for answers and gathers forensic evidence. The park, typically a peaceful venue for community events, was left scattered with personal belongings and crime scene markers.

Johana Bencomo, Las Cruces City Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem, expressed her grief and frustration in a post on Instagram. “Part of me wanted to write that this is something you never really think is going to happen in your city, but that actually feels deeply untrue,” she wrote. “Honestly nowadays, a tragedy like this feels like a nightmare just waiting to come true at any possible moment.”

Las Cruces, located near the Rio Grande in southern New Mexico and approximately 41 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, has been shaken by the unexpected violence. City officials and emergency responders continue to urge the public to remain calm while staying alert for updates and potential safety instructions.

Authorities are asking anyone with relevant information, photos, or video recordings from the scene to come forward to assist in the ongoing investigation.
