Trump Urges Fast Tariff Talks With Allies

United States President Donald Trump has reportedly ordered his administration to launch immediate tariff negotiations with key allies including South Korea, Japan, and India. South Korea's Acting President Han Duck-soo revealed the directive during a Monday meeting with government officials and business leaders, stating that Trump appeared very satisfied with South Korea’s detailed proposals on how the talks should proceed.

“We have been assessing the current situation in the US through public-private joint efforts and have explained in detail to President Trump our position on how and at what point negotiations should proceed,” Han said, adding that he would personally engage with Trump if necessary. This diplomatic movement comes after Trump temporarily reduced reciprocal tariffs to 10% for 90 days, providing nations a limited window to negotiate terms.

In Europe, French Economy Minister Eric Lombard acknowledged the opportunity for engagement, stating in an interview with Ouest-France that the temporary tariff pause “shows there is room for negotiation” with Washington. However, Lombard cautioned that the European Union should not be overly optimistic, as key U.S. tariffs remain active.

“The Americans are maintaining their 10% tariff increase on all European products imported into the United States, not to mention the measures on steel and automobiles, which are still in place,” Lombard noted. “So we're facing less bad news. This is why Europe must keep up the pressure.”

The developments mark a critical phase in U.S. trade diplomacy under President Trump’s renewed leadership, emphasizing reciprocal arrangements while leaving the door open for compromise. The coming weeks are likely to determine the shape of future trade relations between the U.S. and its economic partners in Asia and Europe.
