Ortagus Pushes Hezbollah Disarmament

United States Deputy Special Envoy for the Middle East, Morgan Ortagus, reportedly held a high-level meeting on Sunday with Lebanese Finance Minister Yassine Jaber and Economy Minister Amer Bisat. The meeting was confirmed by Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA).

According to a Lebanese source who spoke under the condition of anonymity, Ortagus allegedly raised the issue of Hezbollah’s armed presence. She is said to have encouraged Lebanese authorities to intensify and accelerate efforts by the Lebanese army to dismantle Hezbollah's military infrastructure. The reported aim of the discussion was to restrict the possession of weapons exclusively to state-controlled forces. However, no specific timeline for implementation was mentioned during the talks.

The meeting adds a new dimension to ongoing international pressure for curbing the influence of Hezbollah’s armed wing in Lebanon. The United States has long regarded Hezbollah as a destabilizing force in the region and continues to support measures that strengthen Lebanese state institutions over non-state armed groups.

Meanwhile, tensions in the region remain high, as Israel continues its military operations against Hezbollah. Most recently, Israeli forces launched a strike in southern Lebanon, targeting positions believed to be linked to the group. The Israeli offensive underscores the volatility surrounding Hezbollah's presence and the broader geopolitical friction between regional actors.

Though the U.S. has not issued an official statement on the content of Ortagus’ meeting, the alleged remarks reflect Washington’s consistent stance on disarmament and the consolidation of military authority under legitimate state structures in Lebanon.

The situation continues to evolve amid growing international concern over Hezbollah’s role and the fragile security balance in the region.
