X Opposes Turkey's Account Ban Order
Elon Musk’s social media platform X publicly announced its opposition to a court order from Turkey’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority demanding the blocking of more than 700 accounts. The request came in the wake of widespread protests following the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a key political rival to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to a statement from X's Global Government Affairs team, the court orders target a wide range of users, including news organizations, journalists, political figures, students, and other individuals in Türkiye. “We object to multiple court orders from the Turkish Information and Communication Technologies Authority to block over 700 accounts,” the post read.
The company asserted that it is committed to defending freedom of speech and providing a platform for open dialogue. “Providing a platform committed to defending everyone’s right to free speech is paramount at X, and we believe this decision from the Turkish government is not only unlawful, it hinders millions of Turkish users from news and political discourse in their country,” the platform stated.
X emphasized that it intends to challenge the government’s decision through legal means. “We look forward to defending these principles through the legal system,” the company added. The platform’s public stance adds to the growing international attention surrounding free expression and digital rights in Türkiye.
This incident places X at the center of a broader debate about government control over online platforms, especially during politically sensitive periods. As protests continue over Imamoglu’s arrest, the response from X signals a willingness to confront censorship and advocate for global access to political discourse online.
