Russia, US Hold Tough but Constructive Talks

Russia's chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs, Grigory Karasin, described recent talks with the United States on the war in Ukraine as “difficult” yet “constructive.” Speaking to RIA Novosti on Tuesday, Karasin emphasized the importance of continued dialogue, noting, “We sat all day from morning until late at night.”

The meeting took place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and reportedly lasted around 12 hours. Karasin acknowledged that while the two sides do not always share the same positions, both are seeking to maintain cooperation. He added that although no date has been set, further discussions between Moscow and Washington are “likely.”

In a separate comment to TASS, Karasin said Russia wants to continue the negotiations with broader international involvement, specifically calling for the participation of the United Nations and individual countries. This aligns with Moscow's broader strategy of framing the Ukraine conflict within an international diplomatic context.

A joint statement from both delegations is expected to be released today, according to a source cited by RIA Novosti. The statement may shed more light on the areas of progress and ongoing disagreements between the two sides.

The Riyadh talks mark a rare high-level engagement between Russian and American officials amid ongoing conflict and geopolitical tensions. While significant breakthroughs were not reported, the willingness to engage in extended dialogue signals a potential path forward for diplomatic negotiations.
