Trump Urges Putin to Finalize Peace Deal
United States President Donald Trump voiced frustration over continued Russian missile strikes on Ukraine, calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to "stop shooting" and formalize a peace agreement. Speaking to reporters, Trump stated, "We have the confines of a deal, I believe, and I want him to sign it and be done with it and just go back to life."
Trump noted that his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the Vatican went well, observing that Zelensky seemed "calmer" and more inclined toward a resolution. "I think he understands the picture and I think he wants to make a deal," Trump remarked. When asked if he believed Zelensky would concede Crimea, Trump responded affirmatively and blamed former President Barack Obama for allowing Russia's annexation.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a temporary ceasefire from midnight on May 7 to midnight on May 10 to coincide with Victory Day celebrations. The Kremlin stated that Russian forces would suspend all military operations during this period but warned of a swift response if Ukraine breaches the ceasefire terms. Russia also reiterated its readiness for peace talks without preconditions.
In response, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha criticized the timing, stating that if Russia genuinely seeks peace, it should implement a ceasefire immediately. "Ukraine is ready to support a long, reliable and complete ceasefire. And we constantly offer this – at least for 30 days," Sybiha said, questioning why Russia needs to delay action until May 7.
The conflicting positions highlight the fragile nature of ceasefire efforts as the region approaches Victory Day, with President Trump pressing for a swift end to hostilities and formal negotiations.
