EU Calls U.S. LNG a Strategic Priority

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized on Thursday that liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the United States continue to be of strategic importance to the European Union. Her remarks were delivered during the Summit on the Future of Energy Security, where she praised the United States for its immediate assistance during the recent energy crisis.

“On gas supply, we have not forgotten how the US immediately stepped in with LNG when we needed it during the energy crisis,” von der Leyen stated. She also acknowledged contributions from Norway, Japan, and South Korea, which helped ensure global market stability and immediate energy security for Europe during a critical time.

“These energy partnerships, including imports of LNG from the US, remain of strategic importance for the EU,” she added, pointing to the growing interdependence between the EU and key energy partners across the globe.

The EU’s endorsement of transatlantic LNG trade follows earlier remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who asserted that the EU would have “no choice” but to continue purchasing American energy. While the statement stirred debate, von der Leyen’s comments appear to align with the broader policy trajectory emphasizing diversified and secure energy sources.

European leaders are increasingly viewing LNG imports not only as a practical solution to replace Russian gas but also as a long-term strategic component of their energy mix. The ongoing shift underscores efforts to enhance resilience against supply shocks while fostering reliable global energy alliances.

The EU is reportedly exploring additional LNG purchases from Washington, reinforcing transatlantic energy ties amid evolving geopolitical and market dynamics. As the bloc moves forward, energy diplomacy and strategic import decisions are expected to play a defining role in its transition to a more secure and sustainable energy future.
