Trump Urges NPR, PBS Defunding
United States President Donald Trump has called on Congress to immediately defund the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and National Public Radio (NPR), accusing the public media outlets of political bias. The demand was issued via a post on Truth Social on Thursday.
"NPR and PBS, two horrible and completely biased platforms (Networks!), should be DEFUNDED by Congress, IMMEDIATELY," Trump wrote. He went on to urge Republicans in Congress to take action, stating, "Republicans, don't miss this opportunity to rid our Country of this giant SCAM, both being arms of the Radical Left Democrat Party."
The president’s remarks reflect long-standing criticism of publicly funded media, particularly NPR and PBS, which Trump and his allies have repeatedly accused of left-leaning coverage. While both networks have defended their editorial independence and journalistic standards, Trump’s comments are likely to reignite partisan debate over public broadcasting’s role and funding in the United States.
NPR and PBS receive partial funding through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), which is allocated by Congress. Past efforts to cut or eliminate funding for these institutions have surfaced periodically, especially during Republican administrations, but have met resistance from lawmakers who argue for their educational and cultural value.
It remains to be seen whether Congress will act on Trump’s request, though the call adds to the intensifying rhetoric around media, politics, and public institutions in the lead-up to the next election cycle.
