Russia Sees Chance to Rebuild US Ties
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated on Thursday that recent contacts between Moscow and Washington could mark the beginning of efforts to restore diplomatic ties. Ryabkov’s remarks followed meetings in Riyadh and other renewed engagements primarily aimed at addressing the conflict in Ukraine.
"This is only the beginning of a long dialogue," Ryabkov told reporters. He cautioned against drawing early conclusions about the long-term direction of US-Russia relations, but acknowledged that the initial contacts are a positive step forward.
Alongside the diplomatic dialogue, Ryabkov also confirmed that a prisoner swap between the United States and Russia is currently on the “bilateral agenda.” While not detailing specific individuals or timelines, he noted that discussions on the matter have resumed following the latest high-level contacts.
The most recent prisoner exchange between the two countries occurred in August 2024, during which Russia released detained American Marc Fogel. Talks on strategic stability, however, remain contingent on broader diplomatic progress. Ryabkov stressed that Washington must demonstrate more willingness to adjust its approach toward Moscow before formal discussions on long-term stability can begin.
The developments signal a cautious but deliberate move toward re-engagement between the two nations, which have seen heightened tensions in recent years. With Ukraine remaining the focal point, both sides appear to be exploring avenues to manage conflict and potentially de-escalate broader geopolitical friction.
As talks continue, observers are watching closely to assess whether these diplomatic steps could pave the way for more substantive agreements in the future, including on issues such as arms control, regional stability, and humanitarian matters.
