Trump Questions Putin’s Motives as EU Plans New Sanctions

United States President Donald Trump expressed serious doubts about Russian President Vladimir Putin's intentions following a new wave of Russian missile strikes on civilian areas. Speaking on Truth Social, Trump suggested that Putin might be deliberately prolonging the conflict, warning that 'too many people are dying' and proposing measures such as enhanced banking actions and secondary sanctions to escalate pressure on Moscow.

Trump’s remarks came after a symbolic meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Vatican City, which Zelensky described as 'good' and 'very symbolic.' Concurrently, Russia claimed to have regained control of the Kursk region, a claim that Kiev firmly denied.

In parallel diplomatic efforts, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Zelensky at Palazzo Chigi, firmly condemning Russia’s renewed aggression and calling for an immediate, unconditional ceasefire. Meloni welcomed Ukraine’s readiness to halt hostilities and emphasized Italy’s support for Trump’s peace initiatives aimed at ensuring Ukraine’s sovereignty and freedom.

Additionally, Zelensky held a productive meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, focusing on the European Union's upcoming 17th sanctions package against Russia. Zelensky highlighted the need for the sanctions to strike key sectors of the Russian economy and mentioned strengthening cooperation under the ReArm Europe initiative.

These developments underscore the international community's ongoing efforts to pressure Russia into making a concrete commitment to ending the conflict in Ukraine.
