Italy Seeks Delay in EU Tariff Response
Italy’s Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on Monday that the country is open to postponing part of the European Union’s countermeasures to the United States’ tariffs on steel and aluminum to April 30. The EU is currently preparing to implement its initial response by April 15, but Tajani suggested a more flexible timeline for certain actions.
Speaking on the matter, Tajani emphasized that the proposed delay would convey the EU’s dual stance: a commitment to defending its economic interests and a willingness to engage in dialogue with Washington. “This shows that the European Union is ready to defend its businesses, but is also always ready to discuss,” he noted.
Despite advocating for a delay, Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s alignment with the broader EU strategy. He stated that Italy would support the collective decision of the member states and expressed full confidence in EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic’s leadership in managing the bloc’s response.
The proposal comes amid escalating trade tensions following the imposition of U.S. tariffs under President Donald Trump’s administration. The EU’s internal discussions are ongoing as member states seek to finalize a unified stance that balances firmness with diplomatic flexibility.
The timing and scope of the EU’s retaliatory measures remain central topics in trade minister meetings this week. As April 15 approaches, the bloc aims to demonstrate cohesion while navigating the challenges of transatlantic economic relations in a shifting global landscape.
