EU Aims for Talks on US Tariffs
French Minister of the Economy, Finance, and Industry Eric Lombard stated on Friday that the European Union plans to respond to the United States’ recent tariffs in a "proportionate" way. Speaking to BFMTV, Lombard emphasized that the EU’s goal is to bring Washington to the negotiating table, not to escalate the conflict.
He cautioned against retaliating with identical measures, suggesting that mirroring the U.S. strategy would ultimately harm European consumers. "The United States wants to siphon off the world's economy for its own benefit," Lombard asserted during the interview, signaling disapproval of Washington’s protectionist policies.
The EU’s approach, according to Lombard, will not be limited to traditional goods tariffs. Discussions are already underway regarding digital tariffs, which could target American tech firms operating in Europe. This broader strategy, he indicated, aims to create pressure while minimizing negative effects on the bloc's population and economy.
Lombard’s comments reflect growing concern in Europe over Washington's recent trade decisions under President Donald Trump. While seeking to avoid a full-scale trade war, EU leaders appear poised to use targeted economic tools to encourage bilateral dialogue and restore trade balance.
As global trade tensions escalate, the EU’s measured but firm stance could serve as a pivotal factor in future negotiations. The possibility of digital tariffs signals a shift in trade policy thinking, where services and data flows are increasingly central to international economic dynamics.
With talks ongoing and no immediate retaliatory measures yet announced, all eyes remain on Washington’s response and whether this EU strategy will succeed in defusing tensions or deepen the transatlantic trade rift.
