China has issued a strong rebuke of United States trade policy, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian warning that American tariffs harm not only China but also the United States and other global economies. Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Lin stated, “There are no winners in a trade war,” and emphasized that protectionism “leads nowhere.”

He called on Washington to shift its stance, saying, “We urge the US to abandon its wrong approach of extreme pressure and resolve issues through dialogue based on equality, respect, and reciprocity.”

The criticism comes amid recent developments in US tariff policy under President Donald Trump. Last week, the Trump administration released unclear guidance on duties concerning Chinese imports. Initial reports suggested a possible exemption for Chinese electronics, but President Trump later clarified that a 20% tariff remains in effect.

Additionally, President Trump announced plans to disclose a new tariff rate specifically for semiconductors in the coming days, further intensifying scrutiny on the evolving US trade position with China. These changes signal a more targeted approach by the White House, aiming to pressure strategic sectors without broadly exempting major categories of imports.

China’s public opposition to the tariffs underscores growing tensions between the world’s two largest economies. While the United States frames the tariffs as part of a broader strategy to protect national interests and reduce trade imbalances, Beijing sees them as a harmful escalation that undermines mutual growth and stability.
