Canada Plans US Tariff Retaliation
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney declared on Thursday that Canada will respond to any new United States tariffs with strong retaliatory trade measures of its own. The announcement signals escalating tensions between the two allies as Canada braces for possible action from Washington on April 2.
"We will fight the US tariffs with retaliatory trade actions of our own that will have maximum impact in the United States," Carney told the press. He emphasized that Canada’s response would be forceful and comprehensive, stating, "Nothing is off the table to defend our workers and our country."
Carney, who was recently appointed prime minister, said he would be speaking with US President Donald Trump within the next day or two to address the situation. He noted that the Canadian government will also consult with domestic industry and labor leaders in the coming days to prepare for the April 2 developments.
In a sharp critique of US-Canada relations, Carney stated that the United States could no longer be viewed as a reliable partner. “The old relationship with the US based on deepening economic and military cooperation is over,” he said. His comments reflect a significant shift in Canada’s stance, marking a break from decades of close bilateral ties.
The proposed countermeasures are designed to apply maximum economic pressure in response to any unilateral US tariffs that may be announced next week. Carney’s declaration signals a new era in trade policy as Canada positions itself to safeguard national interests amid growing uncertainty in North American relations.
