Zelensky Hails US Minerals Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Tuesday that discussions with the United States on a potential minerals agreement have been "positive" and are expected to continue. The remarks follow a meeting held on April 11, prompted by a new proposal from President Donald Trump’s administration delivered in late March.

The proposed deal would aim to strengthen economic and strategic ties between the two nations, potentially giving Ukraine greater access to key markets and investment in its resource sector. While specific details of the proposal remain undisclosed, the tone of the discussions has been described by Ukrainian officials as constructive and encouraging.

Zelensky’s comments came as NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte made an unannounced visit to Ukraine earlier in the day. The visit signals continued alliance support as Kyiv navigates both wartime needs and post-war planning amid ongoing conflict with Russia.

During a joint appearance, Zelensky repeated his urgent call for air defense systems and missile support, emphasizing Ukraine’s ongoing vulnerability to Russian attacks. He further pressed NATO and its member states to accelerate the development of a so-called “reassurance force” — a strategic post-war presence intended to help safeguard Ukraine’s sovereignty and deter future aggression.

“We welcome the Secretary General’s presence and his leadership,” Zelensky stated. “But we also need practical steps — defensive equipment, political guarantees, and a forward-looking strategy for our security after the war.”

Rutte reaffirmed NATO’s long-term commitment to Ukraine and acknowledged the importance of preparing for a durable peace. His visit included meetings with senior Ukrainian defense and foreign affairs officials, as well as a review of battlefield developments and humanitarian conditions in key regions.

The positive tone of the minerals talks and NATO’s sustained engagement come at a pivotal moment for Ukraine, which continues to seek stronger international partnerships to reinforce its resilience. As discussions with Washington advance, and NATO signals its ongoing support, Kyiv remains focused on both present defense and future stability.
