Trump: No China Deal Without Fixing Deficit

President Donald Trump has firmly stated that there will be no trade agreement with China unless the ongoing trade deficit is resolved. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump emphasized the importance of addressing the United States' substantial trade imbalance with China.

“Now I'm willing to deal with China, but they have to solve their surplus. We have a tremendous deficit problem with China,” Trump said. He added that the issue extends beyond China, mentioning the European Union and other countries as part of the broader challenge. “I do want to solve the deficit problem we have with China, with the European Union and with other nations. And they're going to have to do that. And if they want to talk about that I’m open to talking. But otherwise, why would I want to talk,” he stressed.

Trump made it clear that any negotiations must prioritize correcting these imbalances. He signaled a willingness to negotiate but insisted on real progress on trade deficits as a precondition.

In addition to trade matters, Trump addressed recent concerns over market volatility. When asked about the ongoing stock market selloff, he denied any deliberate effort to influence market trends. “I don’t want anything to go down, but sometimes you have to take medicine to fix something,” he said, suggesting that short-term market reactions may be necessary to implement longer-term economic solutions.

Trump's remarks underline a firm stance in international trade relations as he seeks concrete outcomes over symbolic agreements. His administration continues to press for structural changes in how trade is conducted with key partners, with China being a central focus.
