Ukraine Blocks US-Russia Joint Statement

Ukraine Blocks US-Russia Joint Statement

A planned joint statement between the United States and Russia following extensive diplomatic talks in Riyadh was not adopted due to Ukraine’s position, according to a Russian official. Vladimir Chizhov, First Deputy Chairman of the Russian Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security, made the remarks on Tuesday during an interview with Russia-24.

“The fact that they sat for 12 hours and seemed to agree on a joint statement, which, however, was not adopted due to Ukraine's position, is also very characteristic and symptomatic,” Chizhov stated. His comments suggest that while the delegations from Washington and Moscow reached apparent consensus on many issues, the final adoption of the joint declaration was hindered by objections tied to Ukraine’s stance.

Although Chizhov characterized the overall negotiations as “positive,” he refrained from revealing any specifics regarding the content or outcomes of the discussions. This lack of detail leaves the precise areas of agreement and contention unknown, underscoring the sensitive nature of the ongoing diplomatic dialogue.

The high-level meeting between US and Russian delegations, held in Riyadh, reportedly lasted for 12 hours, signaling the intensity and breadth of the discussions. However, the failure to publish a concluding statement highlights continuing obstacles in achieving mutual public commitments, particularly with regard to Ukraine-related issues.

Chizhov’s remarks reflect broader tensions surrounding international efforts to address the conflict in Ukraine and the difficulty in finding common ground among key stakeholders. While the talks themselves were described as constructive, the outcome demonstrates that major disagreements remain unresolved.

As diplomatic efforts continue, the role of Ukraine and its position in shaping multilateral decisions remains a pivotal factor, influencing the trajectory of negotiations between global powers.
