Taiwan Offers U.S. Zero-Tariff Deal

Taiwan Offers U.S. Zero-Tariff Deal

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te has proposed a zero-tariff agreement with the United States, signaling a strong commitment to economic partnership and industrial collaboration. In a video message released on Sunday, Lai outlined Taiwan’s approach to U.S. trade relations amid broader international tariff tensions.

“The island of Taiwan is offering a zero-tariff agreement to the United States,” Lai stated, emphasizing the government’s openness to eliminating trade barriers and enhancing bilateral trade efficiency. He clarified that Taiwan would not be taking any retaliatory measures in response to recent U.S. tariff actions.

Lai reassured that Taiwan’s investments in the United States will remain unaffected and will continue to grow. “In the future, in addition to TSMC's increased investment, other industries, such as electronics, information and communications, petrochemicals, and natural gas will be able to increase investment in the U.S. and deepen Taiwan-U.S. industrial cooperation,” he explained.

This pledge underlines Taiwan’s broader strategy to maintain robust economic ties with Washington and expand cooperation in key strategic sectors. TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, already plays a critical role in U.S. semiconductor production, and its expanded presence in America is expected to be a model for other industries.

The offer of a zero-tariff agreement marks a proactive step by Taipei to position itself as a reliable and valuable trade partner, even as other economies consider retaliatory responses. The move reflects Taiwan’s commitment to economic openness and mutual growth with the United States.

Lai’s comments align with a growing emphasis on strengthening global supply chains and fostering industrial alliances. His remarks were also aimed at reassuring both domestic stakeholders and international partners of Taiwan’s stability, cooperation, and commitment to shared prosperity with allies like the U.S.
