Hassett: Tariff Talks Ongoing Globally

United States National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett stated that over 50 countries have reached out to the White House to begin negotiations following the announcement of new reciprocal tariffs. These contacts reflect growing global interest in addressing trade concerns through direct engagement with the U.S.

Hassett revealed that Russia was notably excluded from the recent tariff list due to ongoing peace talks between Moscow and Kyiv. "There is obviously ongoing negotiations with Russia and Ukraine, and I think the president made a decision not to mix the two issues," Hassett explained. He clarified that this does not mean Russia is being treated significantly differently than other nations, but that the timing of the tariffs would be inappropriate given the diplomatic efforts underway.

While many U.S. trade partners have expressed frustration and are retaliating, Hassett noted that they are still actively pursuing talks with Washington. He said this demonstrates a recognition that these countries bear much of the burden of the tariffs and that the global supply system is relatively inelastic. As a result, he doesn’t expect a significant impact on American consumers.

Hassett also stressed that any potential trade agreements will be subject to President Trump’s judgment on their merit. “After decades and decades of mistreating American workers, it's going to be tough to get him to decide to really come to the table and sign on the dotted line,” he said. The final decision will rest with Trump, who is focused on ensuring that only beneficial deals are pursued.

In defense of the current administration’s trade strategy, Hassett addressed criticism from notable business leaders and emphasized that President Trump’s policies are strengthening the U.S. economy. He dismissed warnings of economic fallout as “completely irresponsible rhetoric,” affirming the administration’s commitment to maintaining a firm stance in global trade discussions.
