Rubio Calls Signal Chat Leak a Mistake

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Wednesday that “someone made a big mistake” after a journalist from The Atlantic was mistakenly added to a private Signal messaging group involving senior national security officials from the current Trump administration.

Rubio made the remarks during a joint press event with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness. He confirmed that the White House is actively investigating the incident, echoing previous comments from White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. Leavitt had earlier denied that any of the leaked messages contained war plans or compromised classified information.

According to Rubio, the Signal chat was established to improve communication and coordination between government teams. “I contributed to it [the chat] twice,” he noted, emphasizing his limited involvement. He added that the Pentagon had reviewed the group’s messages and confirmed that nothing shared endangered the safety of U.S. servicemen or operations.

Rubio’s remarks were part of broader efforts to address growing questions about the security of government communications and potential breaches. The mistaken inclusion of a journalist in such a sensitive channel has raised concerns about how access is managed within encrypted platforms used for official coordination.

The White House has not yet disclosed who was responsible for adding the journalist or whether procedural changes will be implemented going forward. However, Rubio reassured the public that the administration is treating the incident seriously and will ensure such lapses do not occur again.

The Signal messaging platform, known for its end-to-end encryption, is frequently used by officials seeking secure communication. This event has drawn renewed scrutiny to its management and the protocols in place for sensitive conversations involving national security personnel.
