Merz Calls for 0% US-EU Tariffs
Friedrich Merz, Germany’s anticipated new chancellor and leader of the Christian Social Union (CSU), stated on Wednesday that all Transatlantic trade should be subject to 0% tariffs. The comment came in direct response to United States President Donald Trump’s recent decision to suspend reciprocal tariffs for 90 days on most countries—excluding China—and reduce the tariff rate during that period.
Merz emphasized that implementing zero tariffs between the United States and Europe could serve as a solution to the trade imbalance issue repeatedly raised by President Trump. “A 0% tariff on all Transatlantic trade would resolve the trade imbalance concerns expressed by the U.S. president,” he remarked.
Trump's recent announcement of a 90-day pause on reciprocal duties marks a significant shift in U.S. trade strategy. While most nations benefit from reduced duties during this period, China was notably excluded due to its retaliatory actions. The White House described the move as a way to reward countries that are willing to negotiate and have not taken countermeasures.
Merz’s call for tariff elimination reflects a broader European stance on trade openness and comes amid heightened discussions over global supply chains and economic alignment. He also stressed the importance of European solidarity in trade matters, noting, “Europeans remain united in defending themselves.”
His statement may signal Germany’s intent to strengthen economic cooperation with the United States while standing firm on principles of fair trade and multilateral engagement. As Trump’s tariff strategy unfolds and negotiations progress, Merz’s remarks indicate Europe’s readiness to engage constructively while safeguarding its interests.
