Democratic lawmakers in the United States are preparing legislation to increase oversight of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Representatives Brad Schneider and Stephen Lynch are spearheading the bill, which would require DOGE to report regularly to Congress about its activities.

According to the proposal, DOGE would be mandated to submit weekly impact reports detailing the legal justification for all departmental actions. These reports would also include a comprehensive record of federal employee firings, budget reductions, policy shifts, any physical changes to federal buildings, relocations, and data accessed by DOGE personnel.

Representative Schneider criticized the department’s actions, stating that Musk should not be allowed to “recklessly take a chainsaw to our federal government.” DOGE has drawn widespread criticism for triggering sweeping layoffs across multiple federal agencies and has become the subject of numerous legal challenges.

The proposed legislation is seen as a direct response to mounting concerns about the unchecked authority and aggressive cost-cutting strategies employed by DOGE under Musk’s leadership.
