Italy Opposes Trump’s EU Tariffs

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni voiced strong opposition to President Donald Trump’s new 20% tariffs on the European Union, calling them “wrong” and warning that a potential trade war could damage Western unity. Her comments came via a post on Facebook shortly after the U.S. administration unveiled its latest round of tariffs as part of Trump’s evolving trade policy strategy.

“The introduction by the US of duties towards the European Union is a measure that I consider wrong and that does not suit either party,” Meloni stated. She expressed concern that escalating trade tensions could play into the hands of rival global powers by weakening transatlantic cooperation.

“A trade war would inevitably weaken the West in favor of other global players,” she wrote, signaling that her government’s top priority is preserving constructive international partnerships, particularly with long-standing allies like the United States.

Despite her criticism of the tariffs, Meloni also emphasized her intention to act in Italy’s national interest. “We will do everything we can to work towards an agreement with the United States, with the aim of avoiding a trade war,” she said, promising continued diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions. She added that her government would also consult with European Union partners to formulate a coordinated response.

Meloni’s remarks reflect growing concern across the EU over the impact of the Trump administration’s tariffs on intra-Western relations. While some European leaders have suggested retaliatory actions, Italy’s leadership appears to favor negotiation over confrontation.

The U.S. tariffs, set at 20% for EU imports, are part of a broader trade push by President Trump under his “Liberation Day” economic agenda. Critics argue that the measures risk straining vital economic and diplomatic ties, while supporters say they are necessary to protect American industries.

As tensions rise, Meloni’s call for dialogue stands out as a plea for preserving unity in the face of potential economic division. Whether her efforts and those of other EU leaders will result in compromise or further escalation remains to be seen.
