Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated in an interview with RIA Novosti published on Tuesday that the United States’ effort to involve China in nuclear disarmament negotiations is “unfair and unrealistic.” Wang’s remarks reflect Beijing’s firm stance on the matter and its broader concerns over strategic balance and national sovereignty.

Wang emphasized that China’s nuclear capabilities are “incomparably inferior” to those of the United States. He pointed out the fundamental differences in strategic and security environments between the two nations, suggesting that parity in disarmament expectations is misplaced.

“The imbalance is clear,” Wang said, reinforcing that the current nuclear landscape does not warrant China's participation in the same disarmament framework as the U.S. He also noted that Beijing’s nuclear strategy remains defensive and minimalistic compared to Washington’s expansive arsenal and posture.

In the interview, Wang acknowledged and appreciated Russia’s continued support of China’s position on nuclear policy. He noted that Moscow has consistently backed Beijing's right to maintain its own approach, free from external pressure. According to Wang, this aligns with the principle of respecting national sovereignty in global security matters.

Wang also commented on the state of China-Russia relations, using a vivid metaphor: “Like an express train, the scenery changes, but the train keeps moving forward.” This description underscored the enduring strength, stability, and forward momentum of bilateral ties, even amid shifting international dynamics.

The remarks come at a time when the United States is seeking broader participation in global nuclear reduction efforts, amid rising tensions and evolving power structures. However, Wang’s statements indicate that China remains cautious about being drawn into multilateral arms control initiatives that do not reflect its strategic realities.

By framing the issue in terms of equity and national interest, Wang reaffirmed China’s position that disarmament should be based on realistic expectations and mutual respect. The response signals that Beijing sees the current U.S. proposals as not only impractical but also as potentially undermining its sovereignty and security prerogatives.
