EU Backs Trump’s 90-Day Tariff Pause

EU Backs Trump’s 90-Day Tariff Pause

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen on Thursday welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend the implementation of reciprocal tariffs for 90 days, describing it as an important step toward stabilizing the global economy.

"The European Union remains committed to constructive negotiations with the United States, with the goal of achieving frictionless and mutually beneficial trade," von der Leyen stated in a post on X. She emphasized that the EU’s commitment to open dialogue does not deter its long-term goal of strengthening and diversifying trade partnerships.

Following the U.S. decision, the EU announced that it will delay the activation of its own countermeasures, which were initially set to begin on April 15. This move aligns with the bloc’s aim to create space for diplomatic negotiations. Von der Leyen stressed that if negotiations do not yield satisfactory results, the EU will activate its planned tariffs. “As I have said before, all options remain on the table,” she said.

European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill further elaborated on the EU’s strategic approach during a press briefing. He noted that the EU will use this pause to consult with member states and industry stakeholders to refine its trade response if necessary. Gill affirmed that the bloc received a clear mandate from its members to prepare for retaliatory action, should negotiations with the U.S. not materialize effectively.

Gill also clarified that while the EU welcomes the suspension, existing U.S. tariffs—such as those on cars and the 10% duty on all imported goods—remain in effect. The EU, he said, remains focused on achieving “all sorts of beneficial outcomes” through renewed negotiations, but is simultaneously preparing for all possible scenarios.

Von der Leyen concluded her remarks by reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to defending European interests. “My team and I will continue to work day and night to protect European consumers, workers and businesses. Together, Europeans will emerge stronger from this crisis,” she said.

The next 90 days are expected to be critical as both sides work to rebuild a more balanced trade relationship and prevent further economic escalation.
