Scholz Condemns US Tariffs
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz publicly denounced United States President Donald Trump’s latest tariff measures, describing them as an attack on the global trade order. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Scholz emphasized that the system of international trade now under pressure was one originally spearheaded by the U.S. and had generated prosperity across the world.
“This is an attack on a trade order that has created prosperity all over the globe, a trade order that is essentially the result of American efforts,” Scholz stated, aligning himself with several other European leaders who have voiced opposition to Washington's recent trade actions.
The outgoing German leader stressed that the European Union would not remain passive in response to the tariffs. “Europe will respond appropriately and proportionately,” he assured, suggesting that preparations for retaliatory or corrective measures are underway within the bloc.
Scholz also warned that even if the EU were to take no retaliatory action, the United States would still face domestic economic repercussions as a direct result of the new tariffs. “Even if the European Union did nothing, the U.S. economy would still be hit with problems due to tariffs,” he noted, highlighting the self-defeating nature of unilateral protectionist policies.
The remarks come amid growing international backlash to President Trump’s sweeping trade policy, which includes broad tariffs on European goods. The measures, part of what Trump has labeled his “Liberation Day” initiative, have drawn criticism from allies and trade partners across the globe.
Scholz’s statement adds further weight to mounting European pressure on Washington to reverse its course or enter into negotiations. Analysts expect a coordinated response from the EU if the U.S. maintains its tariff stance, potentially leading to escalating trade tensions between the two economic powers.
