The United States Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on Wednesday that the U.S. State Department has approved the sale of MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft and related equipment to Qatar. The deal, valued at approximately $1.96 billion, represents a significant step in strengthening defense ties between the two countries.

According to the DSCA, the proposed sale will advance the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by enhancing the security of a strategic partner in the Middle East. “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to improve the security of a friendly country that continues to be an important force for political stability and economic progress in the Middle East,” the agency stated.

The equipment package includes the MQ-9B Remotely Piloted Aircraft, ground control stations, sensors, support equipment, spare parts, and training support. The U.S. emphasized that the sale is intended to support Qatar’s homeland defense and its broader security infrastructure.

The DSCA also noted that the transaction will enhance Qatar’s ability to address both current and future threats. This includes providing timely intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), target acquisition, and capabilities to counter land-based and surface-sea threats. These assets are expected to significantly improve Qatar’s defensive posture and regional interoperability with U.S. and allied forces.

The sale must still be reviewed and approved by the U.S. Congress, which routinely assesses major foreign arms sales. However, the announcement signals strong executive support for the agreement and highlights continued military collaboration between the U.S. and Qatar.

As the Middle East remains a region of strategic concern, the U.S. continues to strengthen alliances with key partners. The MQ-9B drone, known for its versatility and long-range ISR capabilities, is a key component in U.S. foreign military sales programs aimed at bolstering regional security and counterterrorism efforts.
