Trump, Zelensky Push Ceasefire Amid Russia Talks
United States President Donald Trump reported on Saturday that negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are "very close to a deal," urging both sides to meet and finalize the agreement. Trump emphasized the urgency of ending "the bloodshed" and pledged US support in facilitating peace efforts.
In a meeting with Trump in Vatican City, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for a "full and unconditional ceasefire," describing the encounter as "very symbolic" with the potential for historic significance. Zelensky stressed the need to protect Ukrainian citizens and achieve lasting peace.
Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed readiness to negotiate with Ukraine "without preconditions," according to Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov. However, Trump's remarks reflected skepticism after Russia launched renewed missile strikes on civilian areas, questioning whether Putin truly intends to end the war.
European and US leaders, gathered for Pope Francis' final rites, held informal discussions emphasizing collaboration towards a ceasefire. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed optimism, highlighting continued multinational cooperation to secure peace. Trump suggested that additional sanctions might be necessary if progress stalls, emphasizing that "too many people are dying."
