Trump Warns Russia with Oil Tariffs

United States President Donald Trump expressed strong displeasure toward Russian President Vladimir Putin on Sunday, stating he was “very angry, pissed off” after Putin made remarks questioning Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s credibility. Trump referred to Putin’s Friday comments suggesting a possible “transitional government” in Ukraine as part of a peace initiative.

Despite his anger, Trump acknowledged that he maintains a “very good relationship” with Putin, adding that his frustration would “dissipate quickly” if Putin acts appropriately. However, he issued a stark warning in the event that no progress is made toward peace in Ukraine.

In an interview with NBC News, Trump stated, “If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault—which it might not be—but if I think it was Russia’s fault, I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia.”

Trump said the proposed tariffs would be set at 25% and could be enforced “within a month” if a ceasefire deal is not achieved. His comments indicate a shift toward a more aggressive economic stance in the event of diplomatic failure.

Trump’s remarks come at a sensitive time in international efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The proposed tariffs would mark a significant escalation in pressure on Moscow and could impact global energy markets if implemented.

While emphasizing his readiness to collaborate with Russia for peace, Trump made clear that failure to reach an agreement—if determined to be Russia’s responsibility—would prompt direct economic consequences. The White House has yet to elaborate further on the scope or timeline of such measures.
