Trump Opposes Foreign Control of US Steel

United States President Donald Trump said on Thursday that a potential deal involving Nippon Steel may be treated separately from ongoing tariff negotiations with Japan. His remarks come amid heightened attention on foreign investments and national industrial assets.

“I think we're going to view it separately,” Trump explained when asked about the possible tie-in. “We want US Steel to remain in the hands of the United States and the people of the United States.”

Trump emphasized the strategic importance of US Steel, calling it “one of the most powerful companies in the world” and pledged to “make it strong and powerful again.” His comments signaled a strong preference for domestic control over key American industries, even while acknowledging Japan as a valued ally.

Regarding Nippon Steel’s interest, Trump acknowledged, “If Nippon wants to come in, and I hear they're working on it very hard, I have great respect for Nippon Steel, and I know a lot about it.” However, he drew a clear line: “They can invest and they can do lots of things, partnerships, but we want US Steel to remain in this country.”

The remarks highlight Trump’s stance on safeguarding strategic American assets from foreign ownership, particularly in sectors vital to national security and economic stability. While he left open the door for joint ventures or investment opportunities, full acquisition appears to be off the table under current U.S. policy priorities.

The statement is expected to influence the broader context of U.S.–Japan economic relations, especially as tariff discussions proceed. Observers will be watching to see how both countries navigate this issue without compromising broader diplomatic and economic cooperation.
