Russia Backs Iran Over US Standoff
Russia expressed its support for Iran amid heightened tensions with the United States, following confrontational remarks by President Donald Trump regarding the nuclear deal. On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov described Iran's decision to place its military on high alert as a natural response to the hostile rhetoric emanating from Washington.
“Of course, like everyone else, we are concerned,” Peskov said when asked whether Moscow was worried about the situation. “We hear quite harsh rhetoric. Naturally, the Iranian authorities are taking the necessary preventive protective measures. All this leads to an increase in tension.”
Peskov emphasized that Russia finds the current developments troubling and believes that the focus should now be on potential diplomatic engagements. “In these conditions, it is especially important to pay attention to the possibility of contacts,” he stated, adding that dialogue and communication are preferable to confrontation, which risks further escalation.
The statement comes after President Trump threatened Iran over its nuclear program, prompting Tehran to raise its military alert level. The Russian government has consistently advocated for diplomatic solutions and has criticized actions that may further destabilize the Middle East.
Peskov reiterated Moscow’s position that direct dialogue is always a better alternative to aggressive posturing and military threats. He warned that confrontational strategies could only lead to increased instability in the region and diminish chances for peaceful resolutions.
Russia's stance reinforces its alignment with Iran in the face of growing international tensions and signals a call for renewed negotiations and restraint from all sides involved. The Kremlin’s remarks underscore the urgency of diplomatic engagement in avoiding a broader conflict.
