Putin Defends US Greenland Interest
Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that the United States’ desire to annex Greenland should not be viewed as 'extravagant.' Speaking at the International Arctic Forum in Murmansk on Thursday, Putin pointed to historical precedents, saying the US has previously attempted to obtain the Arctic territory and will likely continue pursuing that goal in the future.
Putin emphasized the Arctic’s growing importance, both strategically and economically, for Russia and the wider international community. He noted that geopolitical competition in the region is intensifying as nations seek to gain a foothold in the Arctic.
According to Putin, the United States is expected to continue expanding its military, political, and economic interests in the Arctic, with Greenland being a part of that broader agenda. He warned that such developments should not be underestimated, suggesting that Washington's intentions are long-standing and consistent.
In addition to commenting on the United States, Putin expressed concern about NATO’s increased activity in the Arctic. He cautioned that the growing presence of NATO member countries poses a challenge to Russia’s interests in the region and could further escalate tensions among global powers.
The Russian leader’s remarks reflect mounting pressure among world powers to assert dominance in the Arctic, a region rich in natural resources and strategic value. As climate change opens new maritime routes and opportunities, the Arctic is rapidly becoming a focal point of global geopolitical rivalry.
