Medvedev Tells EU to Exit Ukraine

Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has advised European Union leaders to reconsider their support for Ukraine if peace cannot be achieved in the near future. In a post published on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, Medvedev suggested that the EU should follow the lead of the United States in stepping back from the conflict.

“American officials have said that if there is no progress on the Ukrainian case, the United States will wash its hands of it. Wisely. And the EU should do the same. Then Russia will figure it out faster,” Medvedev stated.

His remarks followed statements made earlier in the day by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who said that the United States is prepared to “move on” from its peace efforts in Ukraine if a resolution does not appear feasible in the short term. Rubio’s sentiment was echoed by US President Donald Trump, reinforcing a shift in tone regarding long-term American involvement in the ongoing war.

Medvedev’s comments reflect Russia’s strategic messaging aimed at dividing Western unity over Ukraine, especially at a time when military and financial aid to Kyiv remains a subject of political debate in the West.

The United States has been a leading supporter of Ukraine since the beginning of the conflict, providing extensive military assistance and diplomatic backing. However, the latest remarks from top US officials have prompted speculation over whether Washington’s commitment may waver if peace efforts continue to stall.

By urging the EU to “do the same,” Medvedev positions Russia as prepared to handle the situation unilaterally, should Western partners step back. The statement adds to the geopolitical pressure surrounding the future of the conflict and the level of Western engagement moving forward.
