Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has stated that Russia requested the United States lift sanctions on its national airline, Aeroflot, during a diplomatic meeting held in Saudi Arabia in late February. Speaking on Friday, Lavrov emphasized that removing these sanctions is a critical step toward resuming direct flights between the two nations.

“The lifting of sanctions on Aeroflot should be the prerequisite for reestablishing direct flights between Russia and the US,” Lavrov said. He acknowledged that he has not yet followed up with the US on the matter but underlined the importance of addressing the issue in the broader context of improving bilateral relations.
