China Warns of Retaliation Over Trump Tariffs
China has announced plans to take “resolute countermeasures” following the imposition of a 145% tariff by United States President Donald Trump on Chinese exports. In a sharp response, China implemented its own 125% tariff on goods imported from the United States earlier this month.
China’s Ambassador to the United States, Xie Feng, condemned the tariff move and emphasized Beijing’s firm stance against trade wars and unilateral tariffs. “China firmly opposes any form of tariffs or trade wars, not only to protect China’s national interests and dignity, but also to safeguard the international trade and economic order, international justice and fairness,” Xie stated.
He further asserted that China remains a vital pillar of global growth. Describing the country as “the most promising super-large market, the main driving force of global economic growth and the best investment destination for foreign investors,” Xie positioned China’s development as a global opportunity. “It is a shared opportunity for the whole world,” he added.
This escalation follows rising tensions between the two largest global economies, as both nations intensify tariff measures in a growing trade conflict. The back-and-forth actions mark a renewed phase of economic confrontation, with significant implications for international markets, supply chains, and investor confidence.
China’s promise of countermeasures reflects its commitment to defending its economic interests while advocating for a rules-based global trade framework. The international community now watches closely for the next moves in what could become a deeper and more enduring trade standoff between Washington and Beijing.
